[...] I recently moaned about the unbelievably stupid, over-the-top public reaction to Brand and Ross’s telephone prank, where tens of thousands of people who hadn’t witnessed the incident nonetheless complained, which has led to the powers-that-be saying we need a register of ‘high risk’ programmes. Whether this means killing something like Brass Eye (or even Mock the Week) at birth remains to be seen—probably, as we enter another Mary Whitehouse era. [...]

You know, I read the transcript of the 4 calls made to Saches answer machine. It was pretty over the top actually. But all it needed was an apology. The 30,000 complaints is just absurd. It's no different to the droves of Americans who were discussed by Janet Jackson's left nipple which they hadn't seen on TV.

"I’ve seen far, far worse on television and heard far, far worse on radio" - exactly - the BBC have shown people being buried alive on prime time TV (on Eastenders) and nobody gives a damn, but somebody carries out a schoolboy prank on a late night radio show (not defending what they did, just trying to illustrate the scale of the crime) and it's the biggest scandal of the year. Just utterly unbelievable

Like I said, I'm not defending Ross or Brand on this one. What they did was childish, immature and insulting. Thing is, I've seen far, far worse on television and heard far, far worse on radio. This incident seems to be a lot of fuss about very little.

As for Baillie, any sympathy I had for her vanished when she took her story to the Sun. She wasn't 'asking for it' before, but she is now. If you really want privacy, don't get Max Clifford involved and go bleating to interviewers in a British red-top.

I do think it's all a bit pointless, although you could argue that what they did was technically a crime. It was just a couple of messages on an answerphone - it's not like they firebombed his house.

Although I normally steer clear of the "they had a perfect right to do it and I'll defend what they did to the hilt, but I personally didn't find it funny" argument used by people who want to sit on both sides of the fence, I've never found phone pranks funny, so I've unfortunately ended up in that particularly crowd this time.

However, I do think the "she was asking for it" argument isn't a camp that I'd ever like to find myself in, no matter what.
