Samsung laughs off Apple TV threat
Pocket Link’s Paul Lamkin, quoting Samsung AV product manager Chris Moseley on a possible Apple TV:
We’ve not seen what they’ve done but what we can say is that they don’t have 10,000 people in R&D in the vision category. They don’t have the best scaling engine in the world and they don’t have world renowned picture quality that has been awarded more than anyone else. TVs are ultimately about picture quality. Ultimately. How smart they are… great, but let’s face it that’s a secondary consideration. The ultimate is about picture quality and there is no way that anyone, new or old, can come along this year or next year and beat us on picture quality.
“PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”
Are these the same 10,000 R&D people in the vision category that came up with the Galaxy S?
I like to see his face right after first day of Apple’s TV sale. To be honest, as long as it would have an above average picture quality, I would vote for user experience. Most TVs suck in the market and is a mission or rather boring to use yet they call it Smart TV. Unless Smart is the new Idiotic and boring.
And isn’t this exactly what the mobile handset manufacturers said prior to the iPhone launch?
Hence the quote, which was from the then-Palm CEO.
Also worth remembering that we’re happy to trade quality for convenience; you only have to look at MP3.
I think they’re making different points. The Palm guy was talking about a product. Samsung is talking about technology. But Apple wouldn’t compete with Samsung’s technology by building their own screens, they’d buy them, just like they buy every other screen in every other product they sell.
