HP releases Apple tablet
OK, so the title of this one’s not quite true, but HP’s new tablet looks like an iPad, and John Gruber makes a brilliant point:
TouchPad — a name that, not coincidentally, is drawn from those of two best-selling iOS devices
Not very subtle, HP. Also, the announcement seemed lacking in important details, such as price, availability and battery life. Still, I’m sure those will all ensure it’s an iPad killer, right, tech press?
The TouchPad was named after IBM’s thinkpad line.
Not really, but don’t let yourself fall into the “Apple has invented — and owns –everything” camp. Its not fitting of you.
Most competitors joked about the iPad name when the device was released, saying it was awful, not they’re all copying it. I don’t believe Apple ‘owns’ everything, but I don’t for a second think ‘TouchPad’ wasn’t a strategic decision leveraging on the success of Apple’s brands.
