The iPad 2 sucks!
Make no mistake, the iPad 2 we see tomorrow will be a disappointment. But it won’t be a disappointment because it’s a bad device, or because it doesn’t take the iPad forward.
It will be a disappointment because it isn’t the entirely imaginary device the internet has been happily inventing for the last few months.
Apple watchers have been playing a game of “my dad’s bigger than your dad”, with iPads instead of dads. “My iPad 2 will have a retina display!” “Well, my iPad 2 will have an eight-core processor!” “That’s nothing! my iPad 2 will be made of carbon fibre and angel skin, and it will have an attachment that gets stones out of horses’ hooves!”
I would wager good money on Apple announcing a feature that people haven’t thought of, leading to a long line of articles saying “Why we didn’t think of that..”. And six months later they can run “Why we don’t use Apple’s new feature” articles, and the whole bandwagon can keep rolling when they start speculating about the iPad 3…
It’s starting to be a huge problem isn’t it. I’m reading the rllmuk thread just before they announced the new MBPs last week (a nice, if incremental yearly upgrade) and the wild speculations are way, way off the mark.
Then people are disappointed when Apple doesn’t announce the thing they read in a blog / imagined in their sleep / saw on an episode of Babylon 5….
